Frederick Barthelme is an American writer. He co-founded the Red Crayola with Mayo Thompson in the summer of 1966 and served as the group's original drummer until the summer of 1967. Barthelme moved to New York in 1967 to pursue writing and conceptual art, but frequently returned to Houston. After the Red Crayola disbanded in 1968, he continued to collaborate with Mayo Thompson on writing and music projects until Thompson left Houston in 1973. In the 1980s and 1990s he became known for his fiction writing.
