Mayo Thompson, 1980[1]

That was a very precise sort of cut. The Red Crayola, the way we work now, the liberty is all made within a very well sorted space. "X" comes out of my belief that music has got history and that music indicates certain kinds of things. It is possible to make an instrumental cut that is atmospheric, that says something, and so on. But I called it "X" mostly because I didn't want to say "Guitars on a Dewy Morning" or "Sunrise, August 15th." I didn't want to limit it to some sort of spurious specificity. Plus "X" is — along with "Z" — the most violent letter in the alphabet.
