The militancy that implies fierce sectional independence is nowhere near historically sufficient. The activity, militancy of any section must learn to take place on a wide basis and in so doing, find ways of restoring or discovering wide involvement in socialization, politization. This is not to suggest a simplistic proliferation of superficially activist goods. Initiatives can only be taken on the basis of theoretical and practical adequacy and through organization. In the absence of regular pressure, activity will depend to a great extent on general class attitudes. Involve the the recurrent question where an envisaged task can be located in and for history, society, conflict. The task of forming and maintaining a firm base for activity on whatever relative scale and within whatever locale of sectional self-transition requires a long-term commitment to socialist change. The broad left has shown itself unable to organize against the right. It does, however, have its transitory moments. These are insufficient. What is required is transformational beyond moment into a solidly based focus of alternatives. These covering the main issues facing those beset by reaction, their own or others. The effort must be made to prevent anyone in range from conforming to the existing stereotypes of his or her ? negative transformatory significance.
