Interpretations

During World War II, governments encouraged civilians to grow "victory gardens" to both supplement food and to raise morale
"Your suit of chrome" may refer to Hubert Lanzinger's 1936 painting The Standard Bearer which depicts Hitler in a suit of armor. After World War II, an American soldier pierced the painting with bayonet, resulting in what could be seen as a 'tear' below Hitler's eye. The joke may be that Hitler must have committed suicide because he was a sad romantic.
