Two generations of sonic explorers share one stage downstairs tonight at the Middle East. Using an ever-shifting crew of back-up musicians, now including former Minutemen drummer George Hurley, singer Mayo Thompson has been deconstructing rock conventions for three decades under the umbrella of the Red Krayola. Two of his sometimes partners in crime these days, guitarists David Grubbs and Jim O'Rourke, have been carrying on in a like-minded fashion with their duo version of Gastr del Sol.
